Town Meeting – A Bypass for Westerham?

Posted on Jan 21, 2016

Westerham Town Council and the Squerryes Estate in collaboration with the Westerham Town Partnership, Westerham Society and Residents Associations confirm commencing discussions with Kent County Council and Sevenoaks District Council to establish the feasibility of completing a bypass which would join Beggars Lane to the A25 west of the Town.

Sevenoaks District Council’s request for additional housing sites together with Kent County Council’s requirements for the restoration of the Covers Farm sandpit site provides a window of opportunity to conduct this feasibility study and to establish the availability of land and funding.

The provision of a bypass for Westerham was one of the suggestions raised most frequently during the many discussions about and objections to the Moorhouse development proposal. Westerham Town Council therefore feels that it would be failing in its responsibilities if it did not investigate the feasibility of this.

This would be a complex project and it will be key to establish the community’s views before proceeding further. Discussions are taking place through the above organisations to gauge reactions to the proposal.

In addition, ‘Drop-in sessions’ where individuals can raise queries and find out more information from Henry Warde and others have been arranged on Thursday 4th and Thursday 11th February from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Westerham Town Council offices. These will be followed by a Town Meeting at Churchill School on Thursday 25th February at 19.30.

Henry Warde of the Squerryes Estate commented, “I have been asked by Westerham Town Council to look into the feasibility of a bypass which will help regenerate Westerham and save it from ever increasing traffic. I’m looking forward to getting comments from Westerham at this very early stage in the next few weeks.”

Alan Wesley Chairman Westerham Town Council.
