King George’s Field will be CLOSED to the public between Monday 6th and 10th November 2017

Posted on Oct 26, 2017

There can be NO usage of the field during this period.

Unfortunately we have leatherjackets (the soil-dwelling larvae of the crane fly) on two of the football pitches which is why the grass quality is so poor and has lots of brown patches.

If left untreated, leatherjackets can cause widespread damage to the field as they feed aggressively on the grass roots, causing the grass to turn yellow/brown and resulting in the grass being killed.

Further damage is caused by birds, such as crows and starlings plucking out the turf as they search for the grubs. Foxes and badgers may also cause extensive damage, as they too will tear up the turf to feed on the leatherjackets.

The product to be used is SVEN, which is the only suitable product on the market in the UK. The product instructions are that sports fields must not be trodden on for 5 days after application.

THIS PRODUCT CAN BE HARMFUL TO DOGS IF EATEN SO IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE FIELD IS NOT USED EITHER BY SPORTS USERS OR DOG WALKERS DURING THIS PERIOD.
